Well, ghost events giving sanity thing was a bug and was fixed way before they changed oni to not being able to perform airball ghost events. The reason they removed oni's airball ghost events is that it was simply against how oni works (being super active and wanting to be seen) and the devs wanted to give something unique to oni so they added that into the game.
